Three SU students, including two football players, appear in court regarding South Campus burglaries

Three students, including two football players, appeared in city court Monday regarding February burglary charges.

Defensive end Markus Pierce-Brewster and defensive tackle Davon Walls appeared in front of Judge Jeffrey Merrill shortly after 10 a.m. in Syracuse City Court. Pierce-Brewster’s case was waived to an Onondaga County Grand Jury while Walls was given a city court date of Sept. 12, according to the Onondaga County Clerk’s Office. Both players posted bail after they were arrested on charges of burglarizing about $950 in electronics from a South Campus apartment on Feb. 23.

The pair was accused of stealing a flat-screen television, an Xbox gaming system, two iPods and Xbox games from an apartment on the 400 block of Winding Ridge Road.

During the alleged burglary, Pierce-Brewster stood watch outside the apartment while Walls entered through an unlocked back door, according to court documents.

Pierce-Brewster, sporting an orange and blue striped tie and blazer, appeared first and spoke only when prompted by Merrill, answering questions about his permanent address and phone number.

A media request from a local television news station to film Walls’ hearing was turned down by the defensive end. “I care, I don’t want it,” said Walls, dressed in a red polo and khakis, before providing his personal information to Merrill.

A hearing for L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science sophomore Erwing Augustin also took place Monday. Augustin and Bradley Valik, also an L.C. Smith sophomore, were arrested on Feb. 23 after they stole $750 worth of electronics from two South Campus apartments to replace the items Pierce-Brewster and Walls are accused of stealing from them, reported The Post-Standard on Thursday.

Valik appeared in court on Friday and hasn’t made bail, according to the County Clerk’s Office. Augustin and Valik will appear in city court again on Sept. 12.

“Stay out of trouble,” Merill advised as Augustin retreated from the bench.
